YOUR GUIDE TO INCREASING PUPPY SURVIVAL

HOW TO ENSURE GOOD COLOSTRUM INTAKE

 ACTION

WHEN TO USE
HOW
TIME TAKEN

Split suckling

Litter size is large
Split the litter in two groups. Enclose heavier, stronger pups, allow smaller pups to suckle and then swap after
60 minutes to allow for two sucklings at 30 minutes intervals.

On average 5 minutes
for each  litter that
requires help.
 Assisted suckling

High numbers of small viability puppies have been born
Supervise & assist vulnerable
puppies to gain access to teats& suckle.  Ensure they can suckle unhindered & then mark each
pup once they have been seen
to suckle. Consider stomach
tubing vulnerable puppies.

On average 10-15 minutes per litter that required extra
help. Can be combined with spilt suckling.
Hand feeding colostrum

High numbers of small low viability puppies have been born

Milk bitch that has whelped
within the last 5 hours. Syringe-feed puppies with colostrum when establishing
the new litter until the suckling pattern is established.

On average allow 15   minutes for milking &  feeding puppies that
require the extra help.
It can be time     consuming but
colostrum is essential for puppy survival.
